The Singh Fund provides 10 scholarships of £2,000 for the current academic year. The award is designed to help reduce financial or personal pressures that may be affecting your ability to engage fully with your studies or wider university experience. The aim is to remove some of the pressure, so that you can focus on your studies, your wellbeing and your future.
The fund has been established by a former Computer Science student who has gone on to blaze a trail in their career and who attributes much of their success to the life changing impact of their University of Birmingham degree. Their wish is to help current students do the same: to blaze their own trail, pursue their ambitions with confidence, and in time give back when they can.
If you are selected for a Singh Fund Scholarship you will receive:
• A scholarship payment of £2,000 for the current academic year.
• An invitation to a recipient event on campus, where you may have the chance to meet the donor, gain expert advice and meet other scholars.
• Provide a year-end communication summarising how the scholarship has supported and impacted your studies. The possibility of informal mentoring focused on building confidence, planning for summer internships and preparing for your future career in Computer Science.
Recipient details will be shared with the donor as part of the stewardship of the scholarship. This will normally include your name, programme and year of study, and a short summary of your story, but not detailed personal information.
Who can apply?
- In order to make an application for the Singh Fund Scholarships you must:
- Be registered on an undergraduate programme of study in the School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham.
- Be registered as a Home student in year 2 & 3 for fee purposes.
- Be experiencing personal, financial or other circumstances that are creating a meaningful challenge to engaging with or completing your studies.
You do not need to have a particular type of challenge. The scholarships recognise that circumstances vary. This may include, for example, financial hardship, health related pressures, caring responsibilities, difficult living circumstances, or other personal or situational factors. What matters is that you can explain clearly how your situation is affecting you and how the scholarship would make a difference.
Home students only are eligible to apply for this award.
Open to students with the following nationalities: Ireland, United Kingdom
Open to students living in (domiciled) in the following countries: Ireland, United Kingdom
How to Apply
To apply for a Singh Fund Scholarship, please complete the online application form that is linked below. The application form is located on the Student Experience Canvas page for the School of Computer Science.
Selection takes place in two stages.
In Stage One, you submit a short written application. You will be asked to answer two questions relating to your circumstances and how the scholarship would help you.
Stage Two is a short video submission for shortlisted applicants. Shortlisted students will be invited to record a video of up to three minutes in which they answer two further questions about their journey into Computer Science and their future aspirations. Video submissions will be collected via Canvas, with full instructions provided to shortlisted students.
A University panel will review applications at both stages and agree the final list of ten recipients. Decisions will be based on the strength and clarity of your written and video responses, the extent to which you demonstrate that you are facing genuine challenges, the likely impact of the scholarship on your ability to succeed, and your commitment to your studies in Computer Science.
Applications are now open. The deadline for submitting the written application is 5pm on Friday 23 January 2026.
The panel will review written applications and invite shortlisted candidates to submit a short video. Shortlisted applicants will be notified by email and given full instructions and a deadline for the video submission.
The panel will review video submissions in February. Final decisions will be made and communicated to applicants, with funds released as soon as possible afterwards.
