The University of Birmingham is pleased to announce a number of scholarships ranging from £2,500 to £10,000 for select students in Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea.

These scholarship awards are for students applying for entry to a postgraduate programme at the University starting September 2026.

These are joint awards with our local representatives who are listed below in alphabetical order.

The total scholarship fund amounts to £130,000.

The scholarships will be awarded based on academic merit and a University of Birmingham interview to the highest-performing students starting their University of Birmingham programme in the 2026/2027 academic year.

Please note that the scholarship cannot be combined with external government awards.

Who can apply?

Students applying to our Business School programmes are not eligible for this scholarship. Please note that Business School applicants can apply for scholarships offered by the Birmingham Business School.

Please note that distance-learning, MPhil, MRes, and PhD programmes are not eligible for this award.

Please note that students already registered and studying on a programme at the University of Birmingham in the UK are not eligible for this scholarship.

In order to be eligible, candidates must:

• Have received an offer and selected the University of Birmingham as their firm choice for a full-time postgraduate programme starting September 2026. The student must be entering the postgraduate programme based at Birmingham’s UK campus.

• Meet the academic conditions of their offer to the programme.

• Be classed by the University as an overseas fee payer for tuition fee purposes and have sufficient funds to cover the remaining tuition fee.

• Have sufficient funds to cover the full cost of living at the University of Birmingham, plus any visa/travel expenses associated with studying in the UK.

• Start their studies at the University in September 2026 (the scholarship award may not be deferred).

• Be registered with, and have their postgraduate study application attached to, one of our local representatives listed below in alphabetical order.

• Submit your scholarship application through one of our local representatives by the deadline: 27 April 2026.

• Upon enrolment in September 2026, pay their net tuition fees for the first year by 1 November, immediately following enrolment.

Eligible countries

Open to all nationalities but must be living in (domiciled) Japan, South Korea or Taiwan.

How to Apply

To apply for this scholarship, students need to apply to the University through our local representative and accept the offer.

The closing date for consideration is 27 April 2026.

We will announce the interview shortlist on 30 April, conduct interviews by 8 May, and inform the results on 12 May.

Can this scholarship be combined with other scholarships?

This scholarship can be held in conjunction with scholarships issued by other University of Birmingham departments, terms and conditions of both scholarships permitting, but not with any full University of Birmingham scholarship or any partial or full external scholarship.   

Students applying for Government Scholarships are not eligible for this scholarship.

What are the Terms and Conditions for this scholarship?

 


By accepting the award, the scholar will agree to support the University by helping with future student visits, being available for testimonials/ photos/videos for marketing purposes and engaging in other activities such as blogging (if required).
