Since 2012, The Wolfson Foundation has committed some £13 million to support doctoral studies in the humanities through nine carefully selected universities (including the University of Birmingham). The Foundation’s aim is not only to support some of the most exciting students, but also to make a statement about the value of the humanities. The Foundation believes that high-quality academic research in this field is of critical importance to British society.
The scholarships are awarded in three disciplines that align closely to the Wolfson Foundation’s interests: History, Literature and Languages.
Scholarships are available to students who commence their study at the start of the 2026 academic year. These awards are not available to current Doctoral students.
The scholarships are worth £37,250 each year over three years (or 50% pro-rata over six years for part-time students). The award covers tuition fees, a maintenance stipend, and some research and training costs.
Fees for 2026/27 are:
- Home: £5,181 full-time or £2,591 part-time*
- International: £23,390 full-time
*For UK postgraduate research students, the University fee level is set at Research Council rates and as such is subject to change. The final fee for 2026/27 will be announced by Research Councils UK in Spring 2026.
Who can apply?
- These awards are open to Home and International students commencing study at the start of the 2026/7 academic year, for full- and part-time, campus-based doctoral research projects with a focus on Languages, Literature or History.
