Kola Tytler
My Graduate Story
My name is Kola Tytler and I completed a Masters of Business Administration at the University of Birmingham.
I am the founder and director of dropout, a tech-enabled retail business specialising in limited edition sneakers and streetwear via ecommerce platforms and physical stores based in Milan.
A Day in my Life
In the life of a small business director it probably isn't realistic to talk about a "typical day" but generally speaking across the week my time will be spent involving a mix of strategic planning and operational oversights. I review performance metrics with the aids of proprietary and commercially available then move on to meetings with my team to discuss marketing strategies and inventory. I also dedicate time to exploring new business opportunities and potential expansions into adjacent markets/business units, aligning with our long term growth goals.
My Journey to dropout SRL
Pursuing an MBA was a strategic decision to deepen my business knowledge and skills, which proved essential in expanding and consolidating dropout, which I had started prior to commencing the course and during my underground degree (medicine).
The programme not only equipped me with advanced management and financial analysis techniques but also provided a platform to refine my strategic vision. This preparation is invaluable as I plan the next phase of business expansion, particularly into the circular economy with used apparel and sneakers.
My Birmingham Experience
The MBA program was instrumental in shaping my business acumen. It provided me with a robust foundation in management, strategic thinking, and financial analysis, all of which are crucial in navigating the complexities of running a business and making informed decisions to maximise the opportunities for profitability and growth.
The content proved interesting and relevant both for those with entrepreneurial mindset, as well as those thinking or planning to move onto more senior managerial corporate or consulting roles. Moreover, the diversity of the cohort was truly enriching; interacting with peers from various backgrounds offered different perspectives and challenged my own viewpoints, enhancing both personal and professional growth.
Birmingham's Impact
While I remained on an entrepreneurial path that didn't directly utilize the University's Career Services, the network and mentorship opportunities facilitated by the university were invaluable. They fostered a mindset of innovation and resilience that is essential for any business leader.
My Achievements
Whilst on the course I was recognised in two 30 Under30 Forbes lists for Europe and Italy, both in the retail and ecommerce categories, which highlighted both my entrepreneurial initiative and the potential impact of my business model on the retail industry.
Advice for Students
Stay adaptable and proactive. The landscape of work and business is ever-evolving, so embracing flexibility and ongoing learning is key. Also, leverage your unique skills and interests to carve out a niche for yourself - this is where true innovation and opportunity lie. Making use of the university facilities and leveraging the network available is in my opinion also as important as the academic performance.
