    My Graduate Story

My name is Yuean Ma, and I completed both a MSc and PhD in Materials Science at the University of Birmingham.

I started working as a Materials Engineer for Civil Aerospace at Rolls-Royce plc since 2022 when I just finished my thesis writing. I am fortunate that my current role builds directly on the expertise I developed during my PhD, combining the advanced material knowledge I gained from both my MSc and PhD studies.

It enables me to apply this foundation to manufacturing processes, align with industrial specifications, and contribute meaningfully to real-world applications. The core businesses of Rolls-Royce plc include civil aerospace, defence and power systems.

A Day in my Life

Balancing work and thesis revision was challenging when I first joined Rolls-Royce. During the day, I focused on my role, which includes supporting various material processes and ensuring alignment with industrial requirements. Evenings were reserved for revising and refining my thesis. The experience taught me resilience, time management, and the importance of prioritization.

My Journey to Rolls-Royce PLC

My job application process began while I was still writing my PhD thesis. I applied to Rolls-Royce during this period and was fortunate to secure the role as I completed my first draft. Managing the dual responsibilities of a new job and thesis revision was not easy, especially on a Tier 2 visa, but perseverance and determination paid off.
