A Day in the Life of Maisy
Meet Maisy
Throughout my time studying geography at the University of Birmingham, I have been prepared to adventure into an array of different potential career paths. This course is teaching me many transferable skills that can be applied to many different areas of work in the future.
9:00 Attend a two-hour lecture
Throughout the week, I have on average six to eight hours of lectures, where an expert within the field will present content surrounding a particular topic. During this, I will be taught theories, literature and examples of their own real-life research.
11:00 Attend a one-hour seminar
Following the lecture, I attended a seminar, which are smaller interactive workshop (around 20 students). Seminars are a continuation of the previous lecture, where discussions, debates and activities are explored, learning teamwork and collaborative skills. There is often pre-reading of literature before these to gain a deeper understanding.
13:00 Lunch
The University of Birmingham has vast amounts of food outlets on campus, a great space to socialise with friends. My personal favourite is going to the main canteen and getting a burrito, which I treat myself to now and again!
14:00 Drop-in hours
Each lecturer has drop-in hours every week, where you can go to their office and ask any questions on the module and receive assessment help. I find this a great way to be able to tailor my learning.
14:30 Head to the library
I grab a coffee from the library café and get working on my assignments. University is a great way to learn how to be proactive and work independently.
16:30 Go to the University of Birmingham gym
To end my day of working hard, I love to go to the gym. I find it is a great way to relax and get my body moving. My favourite thing is to use their Olympic-length swimming pool and then go to the sauna.
18:00 Dinner with my housemates
Heading back to Selly Oak and cooking a meal with my housemates is a great way to enjoy social time and relax. Cooking a roast dinner is one of my favourites as it's a nice home comfort.
20:00 Kinvig event (Geography Society)
Joining Kinvig is one of my biggest tips for any prospective UOB Geography student. There are numerous events held throughout the year, from Alton Towers to a final big black-tie ball. It has helped me to make so many friends and develop a strong bond with many coursemates. This is ideal on field trips, such as when I went to Berlin in my second year, as you all know each other really well!
