Abdul Aseri

Student

Hi, I'm Abdul and I'm a second year Dental student from Manchester. In my spare time, I love playing sports, going on walks and baking.

Why did you apply to study Dentistry at Birmingham?

My first time visiting the University of Birmingham campus was as a Year 13 student and I saw many appealing factors which drew me to Birmingham. The university has its own train station on campus - how awesome is that! The Medical School was huge, and had a beautiful historic look from the outside. The new Dental Hospital, while not directly on campus, is not far and is beautiful from the outside and the inside. I remember going there for my interview and thinking I was in an airport! After that day I knew UoB was my first choice.

What has been your highlight as a student so far?

I have loved meeting my course mates and the staff in the medical and dental school, they are all so lovely and made my first year of dental school flash by. Going for dessert with my friends, the big game of rounders our year group organised after exams and late nights in the library are all fond memories.

What has been the biggest challenge you have faced so far?

One of my biggest challenges has been moving away from home. Initially, going from being in the comfort of your own home to suddenly living on your own is a bit of a shock, but having the right people around me really helped me and I now feel happy to call Birmingham home.

What has your overall experience as a Dentistry student been like?

I have loved it. The friends and the memories this university have given me so far have been priceless. In Dental School, it had been exciting to begin the clinical aspect and outside of dental school, I have made a lot of friends at a variety of different societies. It has been stressful at times, but that's just a part of it! It's good knowing that there are many resources available for students should they need it.

What advice would you give to students thinking about studying Dentistry?

I would recommend going to as many open days as possible, to find the best fit for you. Make sure you visit the campus and the Dental Hospital! It's important to know a place before you commit three plus years to living there.
