My Graduate Story
My name is Alexandra Lanchester, and I graduated from the University of Birmingham with an International Business BSc.
Today, I work as a Solution Design Manager at FORTNA where I design large, fully automated warehouses for high-volume distribution and fulfilment operations.
My role involves developing solutions that integrate robotics, conveyor systems, automated storage and retrieval systems and warehouse management software to optimise efficiency and throughput.
These facilities are designed to handle complex supply chain demands, reduce labour dependency, and improve order accuracy. FORTNA works with global companies across various industries, providing end-to-end automation solutions that enhance operational performance and scalability.
A Day in my Life
On a daily basis, I work closely with clients to understand their operational requirements, analysing data to design warehouse layouts, material flow strategies, and automation solutions that improve productivity while reducing costs. My responsibilities also include evaluating emerging technologies, conducting feasibility studies, and collaborating with engineering and implementation teams to ensure seamless execution.
My Journey to FORTNA
I started my career on the DHL Graduate Scheme as a Warehouse Manager, where I gained hands-on experience managing operations in high-volume distribution centres, optimising workflows, and addressing the challenges of large-scale logistics. This role provided me with a deep understanding of warehouse efficiency, labour management, and process improvement. Building on this experience, I transitioned into automated warehouse design and process engineering, applying the lessons learned from daily operations to develop solutions that enhance efficiency, scalability, and automation. My background in warehouse management allows me to design facilities that are not only technologically advanced but also practical, ensuring they meet real-world operational demands.
My Birmingham Experience
The strategic and analytical thinking developed during my degree has been critical in designing warehouses that balance automation with operational practicality, ensuring that solutions are both innovative and efficient. My education has given me the ability to approach complex warehouse design challenges with a strategic and well-rounded perspective.
The programme gave me a broad understanding of global supply chains, business operations, and strategic management, which directly translated into the roles I've held at DHL and FORTNA.
Additionally, my studies in international business environments and cross-cultural management helped me understand the complexities of global operations, which proved invaluable when managing diverse teams and projects across different regions.
Birmingham's Impact
Through the support provided by Careers Network, I was able to access a range of resources that were crucial in securing my first role. The careers advisors provided tailored guidance, helping me refine my CV, improve my interview skills, and understand the job market. They also connected me with industry professionals through networking events, career fairs, and workshops, where I gained valuable insights into the logistics and warehouse management sectors.
My Achievements
My biggest achievement while studying at Birmingham when I was awarded 'Best Dissertation' at my graduation. I won the Stanley Howard Memorial prize for contribution to the Birmingham Business School I also won a scholarship (£2,000) towards my study abroad year.
Advice for Students
Your first job out of university might not be your dream role, but every experience is an opportunity to learn and grow. Be open to different types of roles, and consider internships or contract work to build experience and skillsets.
I never thought I'd be designing automated warehouses for a living, but here I am and I love it!
