Why did you originally apply to do your chosen course at Birmingham?
I picked Birmingham because of its amazing campus and student life. I really liked the feel of a campus-based university, where everything is connected, and you feel part of a real academic community. I also felt Birmingham was the right city to study in because of its dynamic and vibrant nature. I appreciated how international and multicultural the student community is, and I knew it would be an environment where I could meet people from many different backgrounds and perspectives.
I picked engineering because I knew I wanted a challenging and exciting course that would push me out of my comfort zone. I have always enjoyed problem-solving, especially when I can apply those skills to real-world scenarios.
What do you think are the best points of your course?
One of the biggest strengths of my course is its integration of theory and practical work. Theoretical knowledge learned in lectures is then implemented in the labs, which can be seen as reinforcing the concepts covered. Testing theories and observing the performance of systems in a practical setting can make learning more effective and more interesting.
The tutorials and workshops are also very useful. Generally, these sessions are delivered as smaller groups, which makes it possible to ask questions and study concepts in detail.
The chance to develop a range of programming and technical skills throughout the degree program was also something that I appreciated. Coding and the use of computational systems are crucial tools in engineering and are essential for employment in this field.
What’s the best thing about studying at Birmingham?
One of the major benefits of studying at the university is the campus setting itself. It is a gorgeous, big and unique place to be based as a student, whether this be for study or just hanging out between lectures. Additionally, I like how events, celebrations and activities happen throughout the year on different parts of campus, which makes the university experience more personalised.
Also, I have found it to be such a diverse and friendly environment to study in. So many students with diverse cultures and backgrounds are involved in the university. Efforts are made for people of various cultures to be able to be celebrated and respected.
Finally, I’ve found the range of opportunities and student support that is provided to be amazing and very beneficial for students. I find that it helps students grow as people and as students, with a whole host of services that provide academic support as well as career help. The university career network and similar facilities are good because they’ve given me an excellent range of opportunities and activities, which have helped to expand my horizons and knowledge base.
What’s the highlight of your time at the University?
One of the highlights of my time at university has been the opportunity to take part in international experiences through programmes offered by the university. Being able to explore opportunities abroad has helped expand my academic and personal perspective.
Another highlight has simply been the day-to-day university experience. I really enjoy spending time studying on campus with friends, especially during long study sessions when the campus is sunny and lively. The university facilities are modern and well-equipped, and I like studying in different buildings and discovering new spaces across campus. These shared study sessions, combined with the supportive environment and beautiful campus, have made my university experience very memorable.
What advice would you give to students thinking about studying on the course?
Be curious and make the most of all the experiences offered to you outside the lecture hall. Engineering is not only about memorising equations and theory. It is about applying that knowledge and those skills in real situations to achieve meaningful results. Get involved in projects, attend industry lectures, and take part in team challenges with your classmates. These experiences will build your confidence, strengthen your practical understanding, and broaden your overall perspective.
Is there anything extra students thinking about studying on the course should know?
If you choose to study this discipline, then you definitely enjoy a challenge. It’s important to remember that no matter how demanding engineering is, it’s equally rewarding. If you set yourself this challenge, commit fully, and you will not be disappointed by the results. Make sure to take time to enjoy university life while also developing your interdisciplinary skills alongside your degree. Most importantly, don’t forget to have fun!
