Why did you choose to study at the University of Birmingham?
I chose the University of Birmingham for several reasons. It has an excellent reputation for both teaching and research, and I wanted to study at a university recognised for its impact in cardiovascular science. I was also drawn to the beautiful campus and the convenience of having its own train station, which makes travelling to and from campus incredibly easy. Most importantly, the University's strong research environment, collaborations with leading clinicians and scientists, and extensive academic network made it an exciting place to begin my research journey.
What made you choose your course, and what interested you most about the subject?
One of the main reasons I chose this course was its structure. The taught modules provide an excellent foundation, allowing students from a wide range of scientific backgrounds to develop their understanding of cardiovascular science. Coming from a BSc in Genetics, I appreciated how the course built on my existing knowledge while introducing me to entirely new areas, including the heart, blood vessels, platelets, immunology and cardiovascular genetics.
Another aspect I really valued was the opportunity to meet many of the lecturers and principal investigators during the taught component of the course. This allowed me to learn about the different research groups before choosing a supervisor, helping me find a project that genuinely matched my interests. The 8-month research project was also a major attraction, as it provided extensive hands-on research experience and the opportunity to become fully immersed in a research group.
What do you enjoy most about your course?
I really enjoyed the breadth of the course. It gave me the opportunity to explore many different areas of cardiovascular science while developing practical laboratory skills through demonstrations and research-based learning. I particularly enjoyed learning how to critically evaluate scientific literature and write research proposals, which are invaluable skills for anyone considering a career in research.
How would you describe the teaching, learning environment, and support from your lecturers?
The teaching environment was incredibly supportive. The Course Lead was approachable, organised and always willing to help, creating an environment where students felt comfortable asking questions and seeking advice. The lecturers were enthusiastic and passionate about their specialist areas, and I really enjoyed speaking with many of them when deciding on a research project.
The small cohort size also made a huge difference. There were only four students in my year, which created a close-knit and collaborative atmosphere. It meant we received more personalised support, had greater interaction with lecturers, and benefited from learning that was tailored to our interests and development.
How has your course helped you develop the knowledge and skills you'll need for your future career?
The MRes gave me the knowledge, practical experience and confidence to pursue a career in research. The combination of taught modules and an extended research project helped me develop laboratory techniques, experimental design, data analysis, scientific writing and critical thinking skills. It also gave me valuable experience presenting research and working as part of a multidisciplinary research team.
Most importantly, the course confirmed my passion for cardiovascular research and provided the foundation to continue my academic journey. Following the MRes, I progressed directly to a PhD in Cardiovascular Sciences at the University of Birmingham, where I continue to build on the knowledge and skills I developed during the programme.
