What, for you, are the best things about MSc Communications Engineering?

The good relationship that exists between the staff members at the University and the student is incredible and as such brings out the best in every student. A student’s need is very important and is in most cases provided to the student as the staff member’s priority is to render assistance in the best possible way. Every student is given the opportunity to perform at their best one way or the other.

What was your motivation for undertaking postgraduate study?

In secondary school, I was able to develop a strong academic background based on what I learnt inside and outside the classroom because of the high interest I possess in STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics).

Also, going to study Electrical/Electronic Engineering further in my tertiary institution aided in broadening my scope of knowledge and widened my horizon in various aspects. As such, my research qualities were enhanced and I covered a wide range of courses in a concise manner.

Obtaining a Masters degree in Communication and Networks Engineering will go a long way to help me gain insight into communication systems of the future, and gain practical skills to be part of great innovations in the communication sector.

Furthermore, having the degree will give me the advantage of adding to my initial industrial work experience in the Nigerian Communication Commission. I believe that the intellectual ability, passion and commitment I possess was enough motivation to undertake and excel in my Postgraduate study. Finally, doing this will help achieve my goals both locally and internationally.

Why did you choose the University of Birmingham?

I choose this University as a pathway to achieve my goal of acquiring the expertise necessary for my career, some of the reasons being that it has a positive record for excellence in my field of study and this will teach me to employ practical knowledge and constructive reasoning in this major, spread my wings and reach my full potential.In addition, the mixture of cultures from all over the world would broaden my horizon on nationalities globally, notwithstanding the fact that my interaction with individuals in the environment would be greatly developed.

What has been the highlight of your time at Birmingham?

I always look forward to the new projects I must carry out in each module I took. Personal or group work always gives me the opportunity to get a better understanding of what my course is all about. Least I forget the joy that my friends and I get after we hand in a coursework and we decide to give ourselves a good treat.

What piece of advice would you give to anyone considering MSc Communications Engineering?

I personally believe that prospective students should have the seal and focus in order to excel in my field. The modules are taken very seriously and you must be willing to put in your very best even if it involves late nights in the library.

Also, a prospective Postgraduate student in my field should be willing to work in teams because that is another way to get good results in every module. Most importantly, time management plays a very critical role during your program as it is a short and very intensive way to study.

How did you find studying at the University of Birmingham?

Academically, it has been very challenging. With some modules, I had sleepless nights while the others were easy to comprehend. In terms of the environment, I would say the student and staff are quite friendly and helpful given that the University is in a multicultural city. So generally, I would say that I’ve had my ups and down studying here but it’s gradually coming to an end.
