Gap year after my masters to travel and do conservation volunteering, started at WSP in September 2023 as a graduate consultant where I worked within the construction safety team for 10 months, moved to the Ecology team in July 2024.

Why did you choose to study Geography at Birmingham?

I chose Geography as it was always my favourite subject at school and I was interested in an environmental focused career. I chose to continue to MSc Environmental Health because understanding environmental impacts on human health fascinated me and I had attended insightful lectures on it during my undergrad. I chose UoB to study as it was high up on the leaderboards for both my courses and the University’s facilities, resources, and teaching is of a very high standard.

What skills/knowledge did you develop at Birmingham the helped you to follow your career path?

Report writing

Fieldwork and research methods

GIS software

Organisation and planning

Communication and public speaking

What advice would you give to current students studying on your degree programme?

Take time to attend guest lectures and introductory lectures to different areas of geography as this could spark an interest in you that open doors to a career path you had not considered before. I first studied ecology and environmental health in my first when I attended introductory lectures on these topics and they both lead to future study and a career.
