What made you choose the University of Birmingham?

The University of Birmingham stood out for its strong Creative Writing programme and its commitment to fostering diverse voices in literature. I was drawn to the University’s blend of academic rigour and creative freedom, as well as the opportunity to learn from award-winning authors who challenge and inspire their students. Having already experienced Birmingham's vibrant creative scene as an undergraduate, it felt like the ideal place to continue developing my craft in an environment that values authenticity, collaboration, and innovation.

Why did you choose to study your course?

I chose to study Creative Writing because storytelling has always been central to who I am. My work as a writer and actor revolves around exploring identity, culture, and representation, particularly within British South Asian and Muslim communities. This course gives me the space to refine my voice, experiment with form, and create stories that empower and connect people. It's an opportunity to turn years of creative exploration into work that resonates on a deeper, more impactful level.

What is your student experience like?

My experience so far has been both creatively stimulating and personally rewarding. The course encourages open dialogue, collaboration, and experimentation, which has helped me grow in confidence as a writer. I’ve found the tutors incredibly supportive and insightful, always pushing us to dig deeper into our stories. Outside the classroom, Birmingham's arts and cultural community offers endless inspiration - from local film screenings to spoken-word nights - making it an exciting place to study and create.

Did you attend any events, online or on campus?

I attended an open day on campus before applying, which helped me understand how the Creative Writing course was structured and the kind of mentorship available. Hearing from current students gave me a real sense of the collaborative environment at Birmingham. That experience confirmed that this was the right place to take my creative work to the next level.

What's your favourite thing about Birmingham so far?

My favourite thing about Birmingham is its creative energy and sense of community. The city is full of independent artists, filmmakers, and writers who are all telling stories in their own unique ways. I love being part of that ecosystem, collaborating on projects, attending local arts events, and seeing how creativity thrives in such a diverse and welcoming city.

What support did you receive for your postgraduate studies?

I’m grateful to have received funding from the Aziz Foundation, which supports British Muslim students pursuing postgraduate study. Their scholarship has been transformative. Not just in covering tuition fees, but also in providing a network of mentors and peers who are all striving to make a difference in their fields. That sense of shared purpose has been an incredible source of motivation and support throughout my studies.

What advice would you give to current or prospective students to help them make the most of their time at Birmingham?

Immerse yourself fully in the experience, both academically and creatively. Take every opportunity to connect with your peers, attend workshops, and get involved in the wider university and city community. Don’t be afraid to share your work and embrace feedback; growth happens in those moments of collaboration and reflection. Most importantly, stay true to your voice and the stories only you can tell. Birmingham is the perfect place for them to flourish.
