Why did you apply to do BEng Materials Science and Engineering?
I’d enjoyed Chemistry since my GCSE’s but didn’t like the lack of application at A-level. Materials Science and Engineering looked like it would have a lot of overlap with Chemistry, while being more application based and placing it in the context of real-world engineering problems.
What do you think are the best points of your course?
The way in which when we learn about a new topic, we can immediately see why this problem needs to be solved in engineering. The small number of students mean there is a lot of engagement between the lecturers and students. Because the School is so research focused, the academics are real experts in their field.
What’s the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?
The quality of lecturers, and the availability and accessibility of further academic help if needed. All the lecturers are friendly, approachable and eager to help/answer questions.
What’s been the highlight so far of your time at the University?
So far, I’ve really enjoyed the content of the course, as well as doing laboratory practicals! The facilities such as Sport and Fitness are great as well.
What advice would you give to students thinking about studying BEng Materials Science and Engineering?
If you enjoy Chemistry, Physics and Engineering content and want it placed into real life engineering context, this is the course for you!
If you’re not sure if this course is for you, ask for a tour of the School of Metallurgy and Materials and see if you can speak to one of the lecturers about the course structure and content! Be prepared to have to put some effort in with this course, but if you are struggling help is always available. All the lectures are recorded so you can go back and look over them again too!
