My Graduate Story

My name is Bethan Kent, and I completed a BA in Modern Languages (French, Spanish, and Italian) and an MA in Translation Studies at the University of Birmingham.

I am currently working as a Product Information Consultant at Abercrombie and Kent, part of a global travel company. My role focuses on researching and developing luxury experiences for our guests across Europe, ensuring the best travel experiences are offered. I found my current role through a local recruitment agency, and my language skills played a significant part in securing the job.

A Day in my Life

A typical day in my role involves researching and developing unique luxury experiences for our clients. I regularly communicate with tourism boards in our key destinations to learn about new regions and exciting opportunities. These experiences can range from treetop wine tastings in Bordeaux to seven-course dining experiences with Michelin-star chefs. I manage a large database of thousands of experiences, ensuring they are up to date by reaching out to suppliers for current rates. One of the highlights of my role is the opportunity to travel. During my first year, I visited Amsterdam and Brussels to meet suppliers, and in September, I attended a trade show in France, where I used my language skills to connect with wine estates and tourism professionals.

My Journey to Abercrombie and Kent

I work for Abercrombie and Kent Europe DMC (Destination Management Company), which connects travel agents and tour operators with suppliers, guides, hotels, and experiences. The company serves a global market, with most of its business coming from the US, and the rest from Australia, Hong Kong, the UK, and South America. My role involves staying updated on new developments in travel, ensuring we offer guests the most authentic and local experiences.

My Birmingham Experience

My course at the University of Birmingham helped prepare me for my career in several key ways. Time management and organizational skills were critical skills I developed during my studies. My year abroad in Spain and Italy allowed me to gain confidence by handling various challenges while immersing myself in the local culture and language. These experiences prepared me for the fast-paced, dynamic environment I work in today.

Additionally, I used the University’s Careers Network to explore future job opportunities and to refine my CV through their CV checker, which proved valuable when applying for roles.

Birmingham's Impact

The support I received from the University’s Careers Network played an essential role in helping me transition to the professional world. They provided helpful resources, including job inspiration and guidance on refining my CV. This helped me feel more prepared and confident during the job search process.

My Achievements

One of my proudest achievements was being awarded the Birmingham Masters Scholarship, which enabled me to continue my studies in Translation Studies. The funding allowed me to focus on my academic development without financial concern, and the opportunity to complete my MA set me apart in the competitive job market.

Advice for Students

My top tip for students graduating today is to make the most of the resources available to you, such as the Careers Network. Stay calm as life after university can feel overwhelming, but opportunities are out there. Keep an eye out for them, and don't underestimate how valuable your degree’s skillset can be in the job market.
