Why did you originally apply to do your chosen course at Birmingham?
I chose to study Materials Science at Birmingham due to the facilities the department had to offer. They have great industrial links as well as year abroad options, something that I am interested in exploring in the latter half of my studies. I also liked how the modules were taught and the ability to do so many lab sessions in first year.
What do you think are the best points of your course?
The best point of the course so far is the lab sessions which we do in first year. They offer an insight into so many different areas of Materials Science. It also enables us to be hands-on with learning instead of just focusing on the theoretical elements. It makes you form friendships with different people on your course too!
What’s the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?
The best things about studying at Birmingham is both the campus and the community. The campus itself provides everything you need to feel settled into a new area. The University train station is also a bonus as you can either hop on a train to somewhere new or to visit home for a weekend.
What’s the highlight of your time at the University?
The highlight of my time at university has been spending time with my flatmates. After a busy day of lectures and tutorials, we can all relax together whether that being watching a film or even having a fajita making night! It really helped me adjust into being away from home for the first time.
What advice would you give to students thinking about studying on the course?
One piece of advice I would give to someone who is thinking of studying this course is to be prepared to learn about all sectors of engineering and science. It will enable you to become a well-rounded engineer and be able to explore the different areas of Materials Science. It may be challenging but with some motivation and hard work you will get there!
Is there anything extra students thinking about studying on the course should know?
There are so many people that can help you whether you are struggling with your academic or your personal life in the EPS college, so never be afraid to ask for help.
