Why did you originally apply to do BEng Aerospace Engineering at Birmingham?

Prior to starting my course, I had actually completed training to become a commercial pilot. However, given the state of the industry post-Covid, I decided I wanted to further my theoretical knowledge of flying to aid my overall understanding of aircraft systems when I eventually return to the flightdeck. This led me to studying Aerospace Engineering at Birmingham because whilst it was a relatively new course, the lecturers have great expertise and the module content is both interesting and holistic.

What do you think are the best points of BEng Aerospace Engineering?

Throughout the course you are exposed to materials engineering, mechanical, electrical, and aerospace-specific modules which allow you to approach problems from multiple viewpoints. Also, the relatively small number of people on the course compared to other engineering disciplines allows for the lecturers to provide more individual support and for the students to really get to know their cohort.

What’s the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?

I particularly enjoy the fact that you can get involved in so many different things whilst still having the time to do well in your degree. For example, I played in the university’s basketball team and joined the Filipino society.

What’s your highlight of your time at the University?

I would say working on the full motion simulator during the summer has been the highlight of my time at university. I had the opportunity to build something I was really interested in and actually apply ideas I had learnt in lecturers to real world problems. Also, I got closer to the staff and students who were working on the project too which was great, as working alongside people with the same motivations helped to bring the best out of everyone.

What advice would you give to students thinking about studying BEng Aerospace Engineering?

Go for it! The Aerospace Engineering course is challenging but it is equally if not more rewarding, and really gives you the tools and support you need to face these challenges.
