Why did you originally apply to do MSci Chemistry with a Year in Industry at Birmingham?

I was initially attracted to the campus as I loved how green and quiet it is whilst being so close to the lively city centre of Birmingham. Now that I am studying here it remains one of my favourite parts about UoB and I think there really is a strong sense of community on campus.

What do you think are the best points of MSci Chemistry with a Year in Industry?

The way that the staff really get to know the students, so you feel well supported and know who to go to if you need help. The head of year knowing everyone’s names makes it feel similar to sixth form for me. I also like the fact that it is a structured course with lab days and group work as opportunities to really get to know your peers. It is the perfect balance of structure and independence!

What is the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?

Campus is a nice place to study: with modern facilities, plenty of study spaces and green areas it is somewhere that is nice to be making it that bit easier to get yourself onto campus during exam season or when a weekend study day is needed. I also really like the way that all the students live so close to one another either in the Vale in first year or in Selly Oak in later years. It means you are never far from campus, friends, shops or restaurants and it is fun to be surrounded by similar people.

What is the highlight of your time at the University?

Spending summer days sat around the lake at the Vale or in the green heart (at centre of campus). And of course, sports night!

Is there anything extra students thinking about studying MSci Chemistry with a Year in Industry should know?

The Chemistry department also have ChemSoc which all Chemistry students are a part of (for free) and it runs social events, sports teams and balls which are a really nice way to get to know and spend time with course mates.
