Why did you originally apply to do MEng Chemical Engineering at Birmingham?
Chemical Engineering was the best choice for me as it included the problem-solving aspect of engineering that I loved while still integrating the chemistry I’d enjoyed at A-Levels. As someone who aspires to become a chemical engineer working in sustainable energy, I found that the University of Birmingham had optional modules directly related to energy and the opportunity to explore other areas at the same time which worked perfectly for me.
What do you think are the best points of MEng Chemical Engineering?
One of the best parts of the course is the industry-relevant group project that takes place every year. It’s great for getting to know people and for learning the fundamental skills employers look for in job applications. I also love that there is the opportunity to tailor the course to what interests you the most within the three main research themes here: Energy, Healthcare Technology and Formulation Engineering.
What’s the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?
The best thing about studying here is the lecturers and the other students! The University of Birmingham is a really friendly environment where you get to become part of a Chemical Engineering family. I always feel comfortable talking to my lecturers if I’m stuck and the BUCES (Birmingham University Chemical Engineering Society) Family Scheme connects all the years together so you can help each other out. Also, the campus is beautiful, especially in the summer!
What’s your highlight of your time at the University?
Trying new things and making friends for life! From being President of the Engineers Without Borders Birmingham chapter to being part of the Archery Performance Team, I’ve had the chance to learn so many new skills and meet amazing people from all over the world.
What advice would you give to students thinking about studying MEng Chemical Engineering?
Think about what you enjoy the most and let that drive your choice of what to study! It’s not an easy course but there are people all around to support you, and the skills you learn along the way are 100% worth it.
