Why did you choose to study BEng Mechanical Engineering at the University of Birmingham?
I knew the University of Birmingham was the place for me when I visited it on Open Day. The campus was beautiful and not too far from home. I also liked the looks of the modules on my course and the support that's available. The engineering facilities are also great, which would benefit me in my course.
What is your favourite thing about BEng Mechanical Engineering?
My favourite thing about my course is how practical it is. There is a lot of space for creativity and I like the modules, where I can work in a team and develop ideas.
What is your favourite place on campus?
My favourite place on campus is the Main Library. There's loads of resources in there, with a cafe and more communal working area on the ground floor and quieter spaces as you go further up. There are rooms that you can book if you're working with other people, as well as good quality areas to work in.
What advice would you give to students thinking about studying BEng Mechanical Engineering?
My top tip for prospective Birmingham students is to visit on an open day so you can get a feel of the campus and the facilities. In general, stay organised and on top of everything, and attend as many webinars or in-person events as possible.
How do you maintain a social life while studying?
I've been involved in a few societies during my first year. I was part of the Powerlifting Society, where we would meet and lift, coached by a GB Olympic powerlifter. I was also part of the Harry Potter Society, which was a relaxing weekly occurrence. The Photography society was also good, going to interesting locations and sharing ideas and helping each other out.
A friend who's never visited Birmingham before comes to stay with you - what would you do with them to get a taste of the city?
The city of Birmingham is very vibrant and bustling with people coming from all over England and the world. There are lots of landmarks from the Industrial Revolution to see, and many major companies are based here like National Express. We would go to the Bullring, a large mall with loads of clothes and food shops, then on a night out on Broad Street. There are also many parks and green areas to see that are being developed to make Birmingham a sustainable city. There's a lot of activities like going for a boat ride on the canals, and Cadbury World is not too far from the city centre, just a stone throw away from campus!
