Why did you originally apply to do MSci Physics with Particle Physics and Cosmology at Birmingham?
I originally applied for Physics with Astrophysics, but later decided to switch onto Physics with Particle Physics and Cosmology! I decided to switch as even though I adore space and all things astrophysics, I wanted to get a broader range of physics specialisations under my belt, and switching onto the PPC course did that for me, especially with my increased interest in the particle and nuclear branches of physics throughout my years here.
What do you think are the best points of your course?
I really appreciate the open-door policy that this course offers. It means I can pop into almost any lecturer's office when their office hours are open and ask any question that I want to about the course. It really helps broaden my understanding of the modules I’m taking.
What's the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?
One of the best things here at Birmingham is the campus. It’s such an expansive and pretty place to be. Theres a multitude of different study spaces available for any student to use, so you get to explore buildings you’d never expect you’d have to use! The freedom in study spaces is a brilliant plus to going here.
What's your highlight of your time at the University?
One of my favourite moments during my time here was at the end of my second lot of exams in my 3rd year. To celebrate, lots of my friends all gathered, dressed up in fancy suits and went for a big Harvester meal. It was a simple way to celebrate but was one of my most cherished moments with these friends I’d made during my 4 years here. It helped me realise that these people were some of the friends I want to keep around for the rest of my life.
What advice would you give to students thinking about studying MSci Physics with Particle Physics and Cosmology?
Do your best to stay on top of lectures and try to attend as many as you can. For me it was tricky to catch up with lectures I’d missed (even though they’re all recorded) due to distractions at home. Attending as many lectures as I could has really helped me absorb the content better, and skipping a lecture or two can lead to skipping even more.
Is there anything extra students thinking about studying MSci Physics with Particle Physics and Cosmology should know?
Enjoy yourself, the freedom you get at University is something that will be hard to come by once you leave, so make the most of it!
