What made you choose the University of Birmingham?

I always knew that I wanted to pursue a research-focused master’s degree after my undergraduate studies. During my application process, I was specifically looking for universities that offered strong research opportunities as well as scholarship options to support my studies. The University of Birmingham was recommended to me by a mentor who spoke highly of its academic reputation and inclusive learning environment. As I explored further, I was deeply impressed by the University’s commitment to research, diversity, and the employability of its students. I believed that studying here would help me grow academically and personally, while providing the right environment to achieve my long-term career goals.

Why did you choose to study your course?

I completed my undergraduate degree in Political Science, but I had always been eager to transition into the field of development. Being offered a scholarship to study Development Policy and Politics therefore felt like a natural next step. The programme builds on my academic foundation while exposing me to practical and policy-oriented dimensions of development. As a youth advocate for gender equality and women’s rights, I was particularly drawn to exploring the gender dynamics within development practice.

In my first semester, I took modules such as International Development, Gender and Development, and Conflict and Development, which have deepened my understanding of how gender influences every aspect of policy and practice. This knowledge has strengthened my passion for promoting inclusive and sustainable development policies that address gender and social justice issues.

What is your student experience like?

My experience at the University of Birmingham has been both exciting and enriching. The lectures are highly interactive, and the academic staff are very willing to support students in achieving their goals. I have also enjoyed meeting people from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds, which has broadened my worldview. Campus life is also incredibly vibrant. There’s always something happening, whether it’s a professional networking event or a relaxation activity organized by the students union and various societies on campus.

Did you attend any events, online or on campus?

Before arriving on campus, I attended several online sessions organised by the Careers Network for International Students. These sessions were extremely helpful in preparing me for my studies and settling into life at Birmingham. Upon arrival, I attended the Welcome Fair, where I connected with many people, joined new societies; feeling a strong sense of belonging to the University community. Since then, I have attended a range of events organised by my department, college, and the Careers Network. Each event has offered me something new, whether it’s connecting with new people, gaining career insights or learning about life after university.

What's your favourite thing about Birmingham so far?

One of my favourite things about Birmingham is its accessibility and diversity. The city offers almost everything you could need, from restaurants and cultural spots to peaceful study areas. I especially love that the university even has its own train station, which makes travelling around the city and beyond so convenient. Birmingham offers a unique blend of energy, opportunity, and community, making it a truly great place to live and study.

What support did you receive for your postgraduate studies?

I am privileged to be a recipient of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation Scholarship, a fully funded scholarship, provided by the University and the Mo Ibrahim Foundation. The scholarship covers both academic and living expenses, giving me the peace of mind to focus fully on my studies. This support has allowed me to excel academically while engaging in extracurricular and professional development opportunities. In addition, the Careers Network team has been incredibly supportive. They provide guidance on many things from CV writing, job applications, to interview preparation. This level of support has made my postgraduate journey both fulfilling and inspiring.

To prospective students, I would encourage you to make the most of every opportunity that the University of Birmingham offers. There are countless resources available to help you grow academically, professionally, and personally, from workshops and mentorships to networking and volunteering opportunities. Stay curious and committed to learning, and always seek ways to use your knowledge to make a positive impact.
