My Graduate Story
My name is Fini Rubianti, and I completed an MA in International Relations at the University of Birmingham in 2023. I am currently a Trade Negotiator at the Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia, Directorate General for International Trade Negotiations, where I have been working since 2018.
I have extensive experience engaging with international organisations such as the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the Group of 20 (G20), the International Coconut Community (ICC), and the Association of Natural Rubber Producing Countries (ANRPC). Currently, I am part of the team managing Indonesia’s accession process to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) within the Trade Committee, supporting our efforts to become a member.
A Day in My Life
My main responsibility is drafting Indonesia’s position papers for various international organisation meetings. This requires in-depth research, policy analysis, and coordination with stakeholders across ministries and agencies to ensure our stance aligns with national priorities. Gathering input from these stakeholders is crucial because any position presented internationally must reflect Indonesia’s interests.
I also engage actively with secretariat teams of international organisations to ensure meeting agendas and discussions align with shared goals. My role includes participating in international forums, negotiating trade-related matters, and representing Indonesia’s interests on global economic platforms.
My Birmingham Experience
Studying at the University of Birmingham sharpened my critical thinking skills, which are essential in my current role. Throughout the course, we were encouraged to take an open-minded and holistic approach to analysing complex issues. This experience broadened my curiosity about international trade, especially as trade policies increasingly intersect with global challenges like gender equality, climate change, and sustainability.
Birmingham’s Impact
The University of Birmingham experience was about so much more than academics. Earning a distinction in my degree and returning home were proud achievements, but the friendships I built with people from diverse backgrounds were invaluable. Engaging with different cultures and perspectives broadened my worldview in unexpected ways.
I enjoyed many memorable moments, such as meet-ups in beautiful campus spots like Winterbourne Garden and The Vale, where we shared picnics and conversations. The big hall near Old Joe was a favourite during summer, providing a cosy and inspiring space to unwind and reflect.
I was fortunate to receive the Chevening Scholarship for my master’s degree, which was invaluable. It allowed me to focus fully on my academic and personal development, attend exclusive Chevening events, and participate in the Chevening Conference 2023, where I had the honour of being a speaker. This support was crucial in shaping my learning journey and advancing my career upon returning to Indonesia.
Advice for Students
I encourage fellow students to embrace every opportunity that comes their way and remain curious about how their field intersects with broader issues. Scholarships and networking events can open doors beyond academics. Stay open, be proactive, and don’t hesitate to engage with diverse perspectives.
