Grace Briffitt

Student

I never experienced anyone around me who attended university so I am here to help! I am working towards becoming a radio/tv presenter or working in marketing.

What is a typical day in your life like?

Every morning I start off waking up around 8 am, have my breakfast and attend my lecture at 10 am. This will include taking notes, accessing in depth information on the piece of literature that is the focus of the week and preparing for my seminar. I will then have my lunch that I have cooked the night before and head to the gym. After gym, I will attend my seminar, then meet my friends on campus and together we will reflect on the subjects we have studied today. Finally I will head home, cook dinner with my housemates and relax!

How did you know that the University of Birmingham was the right choice for you?

Before Open Day, I did as much research into my course and the university as I could. One of the most appealing parts of the English literature course for me, was the university’s direct links with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford. This means that we have access to incredible specialist professors in Shakespeare as well as opportunities to experience the range of activities Stratford has to offer.

When attending the Open Day, I fell in love with the campus and the university’s community atmosphere. As well as exploring the campus, I made sure to explore the city itself - especially the shopping - which gave me a fantastic overview on what my life would be like studying not only at the university but living in Birmingham.

Moreover, I found that the closeness of the accommodation to the campus as well as the quality and cheaper price of the halls stand out against other universities.

What is student life like for you?

I am so grateful for my student experience so far at university. During freshers week, I tried out many different clubs and societies until I found the right ones for me. Taking part in the university’s own radio station and attending the BEDSOC socials have helped me continue and develop my hobbies alongside my studies. Additionally, my part time jobs as a student ambassador and content creator have helped me meet so many great people, gain experience in new industries and earn money alongside my degree. My social life flourishes in Birmingham with the immense amount of fun activities, nightlife and opportunities that the city has to offer. I particularly enjoy watching the football at the local pub with my friends, days out in Harborne and the Botanical gardens as well as heading out to the bars in the city centre on a Saturday night.

What top tips would you give to future students?

  • Have a CV all ready to help the process of applying for part time jobs especially jobs on campus
  • Have some favourite recipes from home that give you comfort
  • Try to attend as many socials / society taster sessions as you can in the first few weeks
  • Look at the reading lists before the term starts and try to get a head start- it will massively help in the long run
  • Explore as much of the city as you can!
  • Everyone is in the same boat as you, it's easy to make friends as long as you put yourself out there!

What's your favourite memory of university life so far?

My favourite memory at Birmingham so far is meeting my best friend on the first night! We both attended an event at our accommodation and instantly connected. Ever since then we’ve had the best times together.

I also cherish the experience I got being able to watch ‘A Midsummer Nights Dream’ at the RSC. It was an all round amazing trip and getting to watch my favourite Shakespeare play at the iconic theatre was really fantastic.
