How did you know that the University of Birmingham was the right choice for you?
Birmingham as a city has always had a special place in my heart, as my family are from here, but as soon as I saw the beautiful campus, I knew it was my favourite. The facilities were amazing, I loved how you got to experience a campus university whilst also being so close to the city centre. The people I spoke to on my Open Days were so welcoming, and as someone who was really nervous about moving to a new place, I could instantly see myself studying here.
Why did you choose to study your course?
Interestingly, I originally came to Birmingham to study Sports Science. Although I have always loved business, I didn’t think I would be able to get in. After my first year, I realised my heart wasn’t in it and made the brave decision to transfer to the Business School. Starting again wasn’t easy, but I knew business was what I truly wanted to study. I haven’t regretted my decision for a second, and the hands-on industry experience I’ve gained since has been worth stepping out of my comfort zone.
What is student life like for you?
Student life at Birmingham is really balanced. I love having everything on one campus, from lectures and study spaces to cafes, the gym, and the Guild. I regularly take part in fitness classes such as Pilates and spin classes; the instructors are incredible. I also love going for coffee or to the pub with my friends in Selly Oak; there is always something going on to get involved in, such as a pub quiz or girls’ run club.
What’s your favourite memory of university life so far?
One of my favourite memories has been the support I’ve received from a lecturer who truly believed in me. Their guidance has helped me gain industry experience working with organisations like Birmingham City Football Club and the NEC, including working events such as Crufts. Having someone take the time to offer advice and encouragement has been invaluable, and it has really shaped my university experience in ways I never imagined - I honestly cannot thank her enough!
What advice would you give to current or prospective students?
As someone who used to hate stepping out of their comfort zone, I cannot recommend it enough. By simply putting my hand up in a lecture, my entire university experience changed for the better. Don’t underestimate how supportive the university community is; a simple conversation can open doors you didn’t expect. The support at Birmingham is incredible, and even though it feels daunting, taking the first step will make all the difference.
