Hi, my name is Grace and I study History at the University of Birmingham.

Why did you want to study in Birmingham?

I wanted to study in Birmingham because it is so ideal for commuter students like myself. It's centrality, transport links and accessible campus make it perfect for a commuting lifestyle. The campus itself is also the most beautiful in the area!

Why did you want to study History?

I wanted to study History due to the flexibility of its modules- it can literally be a made-to-measure course. The ability to study modules from other courses that link to History was another big plus (next term I will be studying a Philosophy and Theology module on Auschwitz). Finally, the varied subject matter and expertise of the academic staff attracted me to the course.

What are your favourite places to visit in the Midlands?

My absolute favourite place to visit in the midlands is Stratford-upon-Avon, especially the RSC, where students can get £10 tickets (this is also available at the Birmingham Symphony Hall). I also love exploring the city centre for shopping and going to small local towns such as Atherstone for some charity shopping, coffee and cake with my friends or boyfriend. Sutton Park and Packwood House are also great places for local walks!

What's an average week in your life like?

An average week in my life as a commuter is super varied! I try to time-block my week as much as possible, allocating plenty of time to studying in the library or independently in the J G Smith building.

At home, I have two small part-time jobs (bar work and shop work) that offer me flexible hours to fit around my commuting and studies, as well as ad-hoc work as a student ambassador for the University. I like to unwind by exploring the city, shopping, and doing a weekly pub quiz. Finally, I am a guitarist and singer, doing occasional performances at local pubs and events!

How do you think your degree and studying abroad will support your future plans?

After graduation, I aspire to be a History teacher in secondary education. My degree will support me not only to build the skills necessary for this, but also to get to my next step of getting a PGCE.
