How did you know that the University of Birmingham was right for you?
Following an offer-holder visit day, I knew that UoB was the place I wanted to spend the next few years of my life. I loved everything about the campus, and the offer holder day made me realise how amazing my course was, making my decision easy. Being well connected with the UK’s second biggest city is something that is very exciting with the number of opportunities it presents you with, and you’re never left without something to do.
Why did you choose to study your course?
I chose to study Economics due to the huge range of topics the course covers, especially as someone who wasn’t sure what they wanted to do later in life. I love that you can tailor your modules as you move further into your studies. The course provides amazing career prospects, and the business school careers team are there to help you thrive from day one. I also like that module assessment methods aren’t exam heavy, with some modules including group presentations and individual coursework.
What is student life like for you?
Student life has been amazing, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience!
I work as a College of Social Sciences (COSS) ambassador where I get to share my experiences with prospective students. I have around 15 contact hours a week and so this allows me to flexibly plan my time, balancing schoolwork with social life and other commitments.
I am the BUCS football 5-a-side captain, as well as being part of the Match of the Day football society and so most of my friends at university have come from this. We enjoy going out on sports nights and general Birmingham pubs and nightlife, as well as attending student events such as the races.
The independence of being a student and managing your time effectively is something I enjoy greatly, being able to cook the meals I want and balance both studies and social life.
What is your favourite memory of university life so far?
My favourite memory so far at UoB was one of the final days in second semester of first year. Me and my mates had a BBQ on the Vale during the day, playing football and enjoying the sun, followed by a trip to the city centre in the evening to play darts at Flight Club. One of the best things about university is the welcoming atmosphere that is created by the range of people studying here, where everyone can just be themselves.
What advice would you give to current or prospective students?
Although coming to university may seem overwhelming, it will be some of the best years of your life. My advice is to embrace it and take every opportunity you get to meet new people and get involved with anything you can, even if it’s something new! Remember everyone is in the same boat so don’t be afraid of your studies, there is plenty of support available from students and staff. Most importantly, make sure to try new things and being yourself!
