Hi, I’m Ibitola, a first-year Adult Nursing student. I moved to Birmingham from London and I’ve loved exploring the city, making new friends, and campus life.

What has been your highlight as a Birmingham student so far?

One of my highlights has been attending African Caribbean Society events, which felt like stepping into a world I had always dreamed of - a space surrounded by Black excellence and people who share a similar background to me. From the very first event, I felt instantly welcome which made it easy to start forming lifelong friendships. Being part of this community, sharing stories, celebrating our culture, and connecting with inspiring peers has been magical and empowering, making me feel proud, included, and truly at home.

What has been one of the challenges you have overcame?

Being away from home comes with its challenges. Waking up early, managing lectures and placements, and mentally preparing yourself to do simple chores like cooking or laundry can feel overwhelming at first. But these experiences have taught me independence, resilience, and time management. Every early morning, long day, and effort to balance responsibilities is worth it because of the growth, friendships, and opportunities you gain. From campus events to quiet moments reflecting on progress, every part of student life at Birmingham has made me proud and excited to continue this journey.

What has your overall experience as a Nursing student been like so far?

My overall experience has been exciting, challenging, and incredibly rewarding. Even living off-campus, I’ve found so many ways to feel connected to the university and make the most of my first year. The lectures are engaging and thought-provoking, with professors who are not only knowledgeable but genuinely supportive, making learning enjoyable and inspiring. There’s so much laughter along the way too, whether it’s joking with classmates over relatable moments in placements or sharing funny experiences from everyday student life.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about studying Nursing?

There will be times when you feel exhausted, overwhelmed, or like giving up, especially during long placements or intense study periods. In those moments, it’s important to remind yourself why you chose this path and what motivates you. Focus on the bigger picture, the lives you will touch, the skills you are developing, and the growth you are achieving. Nursing challenges you in ways you might not expect, but it also rewards you in ways that stay with you forever. You will make a real difference, not just in the hospital, but in your community and the lives of the people you care for.
