What made you choose the University of Birmingham?

I chose the University of Birmingham because growing up, my mum taught me to strive for the best, and UoB is that to me. As a prestigious Russell Group University within a vibrant and diverse city, I knew I would receive a quality education while still feeling at home as an international Student. Unfortunately, I did not have the qualifications. I chose to study here for my undergraduate, but I am so honoured to be at UoB for my postgraduate studies, finally.

Why did you choose to study your course?

During my undergraduate studies in Geology, I took a module in my final year entitled Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. When I decided I wanted to further my education, I knew it would be to delve deeper into this module, particularly the Hydrogeology aspect. The University of Birmingham has the first and longest-running MSc Hydrogeology course in the UK, so I trust that it is the best place for me to pursue my course.

What is your student experience like?

My student experience has been amazing so far. My lecturers are very supportive when I need help understanding the course content, as well as giving career advice. The university’s careers network has also been helpful with CV and interview tips. Living on campus in Vale Village has been great so far. I love taking walks with my flatmates and sitting by the pond while admiring the ducks. I also enjoy being a part of the A Cappella society, where I have fun singing and making new friends.

Did you attend any events, online or on campus?

Before returning to university, I was working full-time and was very busy, so I did not have the opportunity to attend any open days or pre-departure events. However, I appreciated how much the university kept me informed before my arrival, as it made me feel like I was already a part of the UoB community.

What's your favourite thing about Birmingham so far?

My favourite thing about Birmingham so far is the diversity of the people and the city. I have loved meeting people and making friends from diverse backgrounds, sharing food and culture. As for the city, I appreciate that I can go to the city centre for a loud and busy evening in the Bullring, or walk through the Birmingham Botanical Gardens for a peaceful, calm afternoon.

What support did you receive for your postgraduate studies?

The International Students Team was very supportive before my arrival, answering any questions I had about my visa and keeping in touch to confirm that I had applied with no issues. I also received financial support as a recipient of the 125th Anniversary Scholarship, which reduced my tuition fees by £5,000, and I am thoroughly grateful.

What advice would you give to current or prospective students to help them make the most of their time at Birmingham?

My advice to students would be to make the most out of their time. Studying is a given, but remember to have fun. Get involved, join a society, apply for a UoB part-time job, and enjoy university. And when things become overwhelming, which is okay, prioritise your mental health and look into the various wellbeing services the university offers, including counselling and UBHeard (a 24/7 helpline).
