Why did you originally apply to do BEng Civil Engineering at Birmingham?
I love maths and have a real interest in infrastructure and the built environment. It made sense for me to study Civil Engineering and I have really enjoyed it.
What do you think are the best points of BEng Civil Engineering?
The maths units are challenging but also very fulfilling. The application questions allow you to visualise how the work that you are completing is used in real life. A lot of the group work for design project is multi-disciplinary, allowing you to work directly with student studying Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.
What’s the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?
The university is very ethnically diverse. I meet people from all over the world and have learnt a lot about different cultures, which I would have been much less likely to learn if I went to a different university.
What’s your highlight of your time at the University?
I would have to say the start of 1st year because the independence really hit me. Or it could be the end of 2nd year because I was literally living inside the library. It was worth it though because I was happy with my final year grade!
What advice would you give to students thinking about studying BEng Civil Engineering?
Do it! It will be a challenge but with the right attitude and people around you, you will be more than capable of achieving your goals. Plus, completing an Engineering degree allows you to steer into many different fields if you believe that Engineering isn’t for you in the long run.
Is there anything extra students thinking about studying BEng Civil Engineering should know?
It can become really hard, lonely and stressful if you let too much pile up at once. The simple key to that is to stay on top of your work, and reach out if you need help with academic or personal stuff!
