Why did you originally apply to BEng Mechanical Engineering with Industrial Year at Birmingham?
I applied for Mechanical Engineering because it was something I had always been interested in as I am a big motorsport fan and I enjoy problem solving. I decided to do it with an industrial year because I wanted to add the element of employability to help me when the time came to look for permanent roles when I finished university.
What do you think are the best points of your BEng Mechanical Engineering with Industrial Year?
The group projects are what I have gained the most from. The task tends to be more open ended and working with a team to deliver on this is both challenging and rewarding. The feedback received during tutorial sessions can develop the design process and teaches you how to spot improvements in your own design.
What’s the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?
The facilities are amazing and have very good availability. The Makerspace is a great thing that students are open to use and make anything they like. This has really helped me with my final year project!
What’s your highlight of your time at the University?
My highlight has been the different societies I have joined over the years. I have been to many different societies over my time at university and I have made lots of good friends from them. I think the different range of societies is fantastic and has offered many great opportunities to try new things.
What advice would you give to students thinking about studying BEng Mechanical Engineering with Industrial Year?
Having a good work life balance is great so make sure that you are organised with timings as it makes the course a lot more manageable. Most people slack off in the beginning of the year but this just makes the end of it more stressful and usually leads to worse results. Creating a bit of a work plan by doing a little bit each week makes you much more productive.
Is there anything extra students thinking about studying BEng Mechanical Engineering with Industrial Year should know?
Just enjoy your time as it goes quick and seek out opportunities. Once you get to university level, you must start seeking out opportunities and competitions. This can be so beneficial as it can help you in interviews by singling you out for your drive and will. I would also add that getting to know the academic staff is important. Just asking questions in lectures can start this relationship which is beneficial as you can then ask them questions anytime you see them around on campus which is convenient.
