How did you get into golf?
My grandad took me to his golf club when I was 7 years old, gave me a golf club and the rest is history. Since then, golf has been a passion of mine. I studied PE, business and maths at A Level and I particularly liked PE and business. AGMS has a range of modules including golf coaching, custom fitting and managing golf events as well as modules such as sport business management and sport, exercise and health psychology. This wide range of topics is what enticed me to choose Applied Golf Management Studies.
What was the main reason you chose Birmingham?
When I found out about AGMS I knew it was the course for me, being able to study golf and in the future working in golf has always been my dream. This course is delivered at both The University of Birmingham and The Belfry, so you get best of both worlds. I get to spend lots of time on the beautiful campus and enjoy the facilities at The Belfry.
How have you found managing your time?
Between playing golf and focusing on my studies, time management has been very important for me. To stay on track of everything I use the calendar app on my laptop, and every week make sure I’ve scheduled enough time for my studying and golf so that I can stay on top of my studies and still have enough time to improve my golf.
What are your top 3 tips for prospective students?
- Have a look round campus and ask yourself if you can see yourself studying there and living there. The most important thing for me was making sure I would be happy living here and walking round the campus made this easy to imagine for me.
- Have a look round the different accommodation options. Getting a feel for where you could be living will make all the difference! Also, when you get to the point of picking your accommodation, this will help as you can get an idea of which one you’d like to be in.
- For AGMS, go to The Belfry and have a look round at where you could be spending some of your time in the next few years. Again, seeing this is person can make all the difference and help you decide whether this is the course for you.
What are your future career plans after graduation?
I have always had a passion for golf so I will be doing something in golf in the future. Ideally, I would love to be a head professional at a golf club in the future, but Applied Golf Management Studies is so versatile that I could end up anywhere in the golf industry.
What is your favourite memory at the University so far?
My favourite memory at UOB so far is walking into the first lecture at The Belfry and thinking I can’t wait to spend the next 3 years learning about golf and developing as a person.
