How has the scholarship helped you in your time at university (or your journey to university)?
The scholarship has provided me with significant emotional encouragement. It gave me a strong sense of recognition, which helped increase my confidence in my academic path. Knowing that my efforts were acknowledged motivates me to stay focused and continue striving for my goals during my time at Birmingham.
Why did you want to study Law - what stood out?
The main reason I chose to study Law is because I hope to become a solicitor after completing my degree, and my long-term ambition is to work in a leading UK “Magic Circle” law firm. I also believe my personality aligns well with the profession, as I am detail-oriented and confident in communicating effectively with others. These qualities make me feel well suited to the study and practice of Law.
What are your favourite places to visit in the Midlands?
My favourite place to visit in the Midlands is Birmingham’s Chinatown. As someone from China/Hong Kong, I really appreciate and sometimes miss the taste of home, so I often go there to enjoy food and drinks that remind me of home, such as bubble tea. I also enjoy cooking, so Chinatown has become a place where I can find ingredients and continue my interest in preparing meals.
Has anything surprised you about living the UK?
The biggest difference I have noticed between living in the UK and my home country is the cultural. Although I have been in the UK for three years and have become more familiar with the culture here, I am still actively learning to adapt to certain cultural differences. This process has helped me become more open-minded, patient, and confident when interacting with people from different backgrounds.
Can you describe an average week in your life?
In a typical week, I attend my classes during the day and usually go to the library afterwards to study with my mates. We often have dinner together in the evening. If I have free time during the week, or on weekends, I like to buy ingredients and cook my own meals, as I have more time. On weekends, I also make plans to visit different places in Birmingham or other cities in the UK with my friends. Additionally, I play basketball once or twice a week and go to the gym at least three times a week to maintain my physical health.
How do you think your degree and studying abroad will support your future plans?
I believe that my degree will directly support my future development. As I mentioned earlier, my goal is to become a solicitor, and obtaining an undergraduate Law degree is an essential step towards this career path. Studying abroad has also broadened my perspective, improved my independence, and strengthened my ability to build relationships with people from different backgrounds. These experiences have shaped my personal growth and will have a positive and lasting impact on my future.
What have become some of your new favourite things after living in the UK?
Since coming to the UK, I have developed several new interests. I began playing basketball and following the NBA, which has become something I really enjoy. I also started travelling to nearby European countries during holidays to explore and take photographs. In addition, I now regularly go to the gym. These are all activities I had not experienced before coming to the UK, and they have become important parts of my lifestyle.
