My Graduate Story

My name is John Holden and I completed a MSc (Eng) Integrated Management Systems at University of Birmingham.

I am currently a Director of Business Development at NextSilicon. NextSilicon is a deep-tech company focused on developing the next-generation compute platform for the HPC (High Performance Computing) market. As Director of Business Development I drive Business Development, Go-To-Market and broader Commercial strategies for NextSilicon.

My Birmingham Experience

During my MSc I enjoyed two industrial placements. The second industrial place was with Avery Berkel (at the time a subsidiary of GEC). The MSc provided a great foundation for my career. Many of the topics covered during the MSc have been directly relevant to many of the different roles I have held. The careers office were excellent in making us aware of potential employers, the 'milk round'. In addition I was part of the student Industrial Society (or perhaps it had a slightly different name) this society had great connections with potential employers and provided additional activities and workshops which improved my employability.

Birmingham's Impact

The combination of relevant subjects and work placements allowed me (a) to secure multiple job offers (b) when I started work already have real experience with some relevant study. After that industrial placement I joined GEC (Avery Berkel) as a commercial graduate trainee.

Advice for Students

Get practical experience at the earliest possible opportunity even if it is unpaid work placements. If that proves hard volunteering work is a real help. If you are interested in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) - research volunteering as a STEM Ambassador for example.
