Why did you originally apply to do MSci Theoretical Physics at Birmingham?
I really liked maths at school and wanted to be able to apply it to the physics I was learning after A-Level. There’s no shortage of maths in any physics degree, but the opportunity to study specific theoretical physics modules with a core focus on maths was really appealing.
What do you think are the best points of your course?
There are a huge variety of modules to choose from and even though I’m on a specialist degree I can still choose modules from other areas. I’ve studied modules in astrophysics, medical imaging, nuclear physics, and particle physics to name a few!
What’s the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?
The staff and students in the Physics department at Birmingham are so friendly; I didn’t feel the same warm and welcoming atmosphere at other universities. The open-door policy with staff makes it really easy to go and ask them any questions I have about my work.
What’s your highlight of your time at the University?
Finding my passion for medical physics has made all the work feel worth it. Now I know what I’d like to do after I graduate, and the support I’ve had from the department to help me reach this goal has been amazing.
What advice would you give to students thinking about studying MSci Theoretical Physics?
Talk to current students as much as you can, especially if you’re considering a specialist course in physics, as they will be able to give you the best idea of what it’s really like to be a physicist in Birmingham. Everyone at the Open Days and Offer Holder Days loves to chat, so make the most of it!
