Why did you originally apply to do your chosen course at Birmingham?
I settled for Computer Engineering. Being a mix between Computer Science and Engineering, I get the confidence that the modules I am studying are both interesting and relevant to me, and that I’ll have a much wider variety of options after finishing my degree.
What do you think are the best points of your course?
Laboratory practicals. For me, it’s one thing to be told something, and it’s another thing to learn by actually doing it. Studying Computer Engineering, there’s never a shortage of engaging practicals to complement the theories I’ve learnt about in lectures. In the first year alone, I have already gained hands-on experience in programming with 3 different languages (C, C++ & Java) and I am now able to read, prototype and build electrical circuits.
What’s the best thing about studying at University of Birmingham?
Opportunities, whether it’s sports, employability or social events, at the University of Birmingham there’s always something going on. And although it may seem daunting at first, I truly believe the university is home to one of the most welcoming environments ever. there’s always something to take part in.
What are some highlights of your time at Birmingham?
The UB Robotics SumoBot competition. Hands down one of the best experiences so far. There’s just something special about actually building my work and seeing it real life.
What advice would you give to students thinking about studying on the course
Take the time to stay on top of your work and consolidate your learning. With lots of things happening all over campus, it’s easy to get sidetracked and fall behind. Don’t forget to make use of office-hours or ask your course-mates if you need additional help.
