Why did you originally apply to do BSc Mathematics with a Year in Industry at Birmingham?

Mathematics always interested me in school, which only increased while studying maths and further maths at A-level. Without having a certain career path that I want to follow, I knew that by studying Mathematics with a Year in Industry I would be able to pursue a subject that I had great interest in whilst simultaneously building the skills that would help me with whatever future career path I decided.

What do you think are the best points of BSc Mathematics with a Year in Industry?

One of my favourite aspects of my course that I have encountered so far has been the mathematical Modelling and Problem Solving. We are given the opportunity to work as a team and develop mathematical models to tackle difficult problems. This module allows us to enhance our creative thinking as well as providing an insight into how mathematics can be applied into future careers. I have enjoyed working with my assigned group and sharing our ideas before coming to a final solution.

What is the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?

One of my favourite things about studying at the University of Birmingham has been the campus itself. With the greenery surrounding campus, it creates a lovely environment to feel inspired to study and enjoy my course. I also love the community that has been created by living in the Vale, along with the range of activities provided by ‘Active Residences’ and the societies that I have joined, to give me a way to meet new people and try new sports.

What is the highlight of your time at the University?

While I haven’t been at the university long, my highlight so far has been joining different societies such as Aitken Netball, Bench-ball and Mathsoc. Through these societies I have enjoyed meeting a wide range of people, playing matches together and having some fun nights out. It has been great getting to know the second and third years more, as well as making better friendships with those on my course and living in my accommodation.

What advice would you give to students thinking about studying BSc Mathematics with a Year in Industry?

My advice to students would focus on why mathematics can be an amazing course and why the University of Birmingham is the best place to study. Whilst listening and responding to their worries and concerns, I would emphasise the range of options that the course offers and the career opportunities that maths can provide. I would also share my experiences with the variety of extra-curricular activities that this university has to offer.

Is there anything extra students thinking about studying on the course should know?

I think it is really important to highlight the academic help system that has been set up by Birmingham University. Guided study sessions with PHD students are great for assisting those who are learning new content that they don’t yet fully understand. In addition to this, the PASS scheme and weekly tutor sessions present opportunities for students to receive help on specific questions that they may be struggling with. I believe that prospective students should know about these schemes as it shows how the mathematics department at Birmingham supports their students through the academic year.
