Why did you originally apply to do BSc Mathematics and Computer Science at Birmingham?

Because the choice of modules was very appealing and suited what I wanted to study. The city of Birmingham also has good travel connections to different places be it London or up north into Scotland. The city of Birmingham also has many cute coffee shops, the canals...

What do you think are the best points of BSc Mathematics and Computer Science?

The best points are definitely the support I receive from the staff whether it be my lecturers, my tutor or anyone in both Schools of Mathematics and Computer Science; they are always eager to help and respond to any questions I have.

What is the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?

I love UoB’s campus and how everything is just a 15-minute walk away from my student accommodation. I get to have that tight-knit feeling and it is very easy to plan hangouts and study sessions with friends.

What is the highlight of your time at the University?

My highlight would be attending a 24-hour hackathon the Computer Science Society hosted (very nerdy answer). I got to use my problem-solving skills and creativity to create a turn-based rap battle game with cute characters. Additionally, I got to collaborate with 3 other incredible teammates who made the experience even more fun!

What advice would you give to students thinking about studying BSc Mathematics and Computer Science?

I would say to always ask questions when you have any. No question is a stupid question! Your lecturers and tutors are always there to help. Use every bit of support that you have whether it be PASS (Peer-Assisted Study Sessions), the Maths Support Centre or labs with PGTA’s or the wellbeing staff; if you need help, do not hesitate.

Is there anything extra students thinking about studying on the course should know?

Try (keyword try) to have a healthy work-life balance in university and try out new things. This includes new hobbies, societies, university events. Try to get outside, cook that new recipe you’ve been eyeing, touch some grass because life is not just university. So, enjoy every moment!
