Hey all! I'm Mahina, a final-year student studying Drama and Theatre Arts. My main interest in stage management is stage management, and I love watching all types of theatre performances, especially immersive theatre! I was born and raised in Hong Kong, and I speak Cantonese, Mandarin and English fluently. Here are a few fun facts about me! I'm the Student Experience Ambassador for the School of English, Arts, and Creative Studies at the University, my favourite musical is Bonnie and Clyde, and my favourite book is Before the Coffee Gets Cold. Outside of drama, I have a deep interest in philosophy and politics. I plan to go into postgraduate school after my undergrad but stuck between education, stage management, and psychology.

From dreaming about studying here to actually being here, Birmingham has truly given me the most incredible three years of my life!

How did you choose your degree subject?

I chose this degree because of the amazing variety of modules on offer! From exploring theatrical theory, which first caught my interest during my diploma years, to hands-on praxis modules where I get to dive into the practical side of theatre, every aspect has been so enriching. I’ve also loved gaining behind-the-scenes experience, learning how productions come to life and how a theatre operates. It’s been such a well-rounded and inspiring journey!

My favourite module

Ever since I was 15, I’ve known that stage management was my passion, and the Theatre Crafts module has only reinforced that love. From learning how to usher and build sets for professional performances to stage-managing a production team and cast, I’ve gained invaluable experience. The tutors have been so incredibly supportive, always open to answering questions and helping us grow, I’ve felt so encouraged every step of the way!

Most underrated spot in Birmingham

It can be hard to venture beyond Selly Oak and Edgbaston, especially with a busy schedule, but I have to say, Harborne has completely grown on me! I love its cozy cafes, the treasure trove of charity shops, and the overall peaceful atmosphere. It’s a lovely escape from the buzz of campus life!

One piece of advice for incoming students

Throw yourself into university life, not just academically, but socially too! Some of the best memories come from spontaneous coffee dates, late-night chats, and adventures with friends. It’s such a unique time in your life when you get to live, learn, and grow alongside amazing people. While grades are important, the friendships and experiences you make here are just as valuable, if not more so. So, say yes to new experiences, make connections, and enjoy every moment!
