How did you know that the University of Birmingham was the right choice for you?
Originally, I had thought I wanted a city University where I could access amenities, part-time work, social spaces and shopping areas, but after visiting a few, I realised it was not for me. Neither was a countryside University. Despite wanting city access, I realised I also needed green spaces and scenic surroundings. When I went to view The University of Birmingham, I knew it was exactly what I was looking for, it fulfilled both of my desires for a perfect campus location!
Why did you choose to study your course?
I chose to study Accounting and Finance because I have always enjoyed handling my finances, budgeting and helping others such as my peers and friends with financial advice. I was often called my friends version of Martin Lewis, which always made me feel like I was helping and making a difference. I decided I wanted to do that as a career and the University offered me the best path. Not only have they offered me financial support for my studies through A2B (Access to Birmingham) but also provided key exam exemptions for the ICAEW.
What is student life like for you?
Student life has been interesting for me. I have been able to move outside my comfort zone and take part in different experiences I may not have done otherwise. In my 1st year, I joined a society that actually ignited my passion for BSL, I got to learn a new language in a student society and discover a new talent and interest that I have kept on learning since! I have also had great opportunities in getting involved with careers events such as the Birmingham Enterprise Challenge and the Accounting and Finance Society mentorship scheme, where I got to meet peers on my course from each year of study and be guided and supported with coursework, exams and job applications as well as provide my own support to younger years later on.
What's your favourite memory of university life so far?
My favourite memory has to be in my 1st week of study in 1st year. As part of my Academic Skills module, we were required to form groups with people we barely knew and do an escape room in the city! I remember being anxious and worried at the time, I knew nobody on my course and didn’t know how I could work with them. In the end, the group I joined ended up being my closest friend group throughout my 3 years of study at the University!
What advice would you give to current or prospective students?
Push yourself out of your comfort zone! I gained so many skills and new interests by getting involved with what the University has to offer. Not just to help you towards job applications but to help you grow as an individual, find your likes and dislikes, what you are good and bad at, push your boundary further. Have a go at a challenge or a Society you may never have thought to join otherwise, and have fun!
