Why did you choose to study at the University of Birmingham?

I chose the University of Birmingham because of its world-class reputation in medical and clinical research. The university offers exceptional research infrastructure, access to renowned experts, and a vibrant international academic community.

What made you choose your MSc course, and what interested you most about the subject?

My passion for understanding chronic respiratory conditions, such as COPD and Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (AATD), drove my choice. I was fascinated by how translational research can bridge the gap between complex physiological data and real-world clinical outcomes for patients.

How did your MSc experience influence your decision to continue with a PhD at Birmingham?

My MSc experience provided a solid foundation in scientific methodology and research ethics. Working alongside dedicated supervisors and seeing the tangible impact of the university’s research inspired me to pursue deeper, independent research through a PhD in the same field.

What do you enjoy most about your PhD?

What I enjoy most is the privilege of conducting meaningful research that contributes directly to the field of respiratory medicine. Highlights of my journey so far include publishing my systematic reviews in peer-reviewed journals and having the opportunity to present our findings at major international conferences like the ERS Congress.

How would you describe the research environment, supervision, and support you've received during your studies?

The research environment at Birmingham is truly outstanding, collaborative, encouraging, and highly stimulating. I have been extremely fortunate to receive invaluable guidance and mentorship from my supervisors, Professor Elizabeth Sapey and Professor Robert Stockley. The support from the school, from administrative assistance to academic guidance, has been exceptional throughout.

How has your time at Birmingham helped you develop the knowledge and skills you'll need for your future career?

My time here has equipped me with a comprehensive set of academic and professional skills, including data analysis, systematic review methodologies, statistical protocol design, and scientific publishing. Presenting research and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams has also significantly built my confidence as an independent researcher prepared for a career in academic medicine.
