Why did you originally apply to do your chosen course at Birmingham?

I won’t be niche and say I had a strong passion for my course before I applied. I chose it because it aligned with the subjects I had previously studied during my Foundation Year: Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics. I have always had a strong affinity for mathematics and working with numbers, so this course aligned with my natural strengths and passions.

What do you think are the best points of your course?

The ability to gain different kinds of experiences over the course of the programme. I don’t think any other degree offers this variety. I’ve gained experience working with numbers, in team settings, with complex software, conducting lab work, and writing reports, among other skills. It encourages you to think expansively, and I have developed a variety of soft and technical skills that I know I will carry with me for years to come.

What’s the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?

I really enjoy how inclusive it is and how there’s a society for every interest. As an international student, I was worried about feeling different, but the university has ensured everyone feels welcome and respected, regardless of their background. I appreciate the high academic standard at the university and the ample opportunities to grow and gain experience outside the classroom.

What’s the highlight of your time at the University?

My industrial visit to European Metal Recycling (EMR) was the defining moment of my degree. Seeing complex processes in real-time was fascinating, and the opportunity to gain new experiences and explore potential opportunities in the industry was incredibly valuable to me.

What advice would you give to students thinking about studying on the course?

Be prepared to work hard and take everyday step by step. It’ll be worth it. It’s a rigorous and interesting course that will challenge you. There will be times when you’ll feel like giving up but stay resilient. Continuously show up, work hard and create systems that will aid your success during your degree early. Remember to collaborate with your peers and ask questions of your lecturers; they’re always willing to help.

Is there anything extra students thinking about studying on the course should know?

You’ll become a more well-rounded individual, I strongly advise you to study it. Think about the kind of work you’ll like to do after your degree and try your best to gain work experience during your university days.
