What was your journey to getting a job after graduation?

As many know, getting a job right after university is becoming increasingly challenging. I applied to roles that genuinely interested me and tailored my applications to them. For my first role after graduating, I was choosing between the Civil Service and Boston Scientific. I knew that I wanted to have science and healthcare at the core of my role with a blend of commercial aspects and the role with Boston Scientific was a great opportunity for this. After one successful year with Boston Scientific, I transitioned into my role at Abbott Medical.

What does a typical day in role with Abbott Medical look like?

A typical day in my role, as a Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) Therapy Specialist, involves getting up bright and early in the morning to travel to a hospital within my territory. Usually I get to the hospitals by 8am and the first procedure will be at 9am. During the procedure, my role involves , but isn’t limited to, preparing the valve and offering advice to the operators regarding the implantation. The time I finish varies daily, depending on how many cases we do. I’m also responsible for keeping on top of stock, ordering and documenting procedures. Conducting educational events is also a key aspect of my role.

How do you feel your course helped to prepare you for your career?

My course, particularly including the Master’s year, was crucial. Primarily because it was a prerequisite to hold a Master’s degree to apply for my previous role. Medical technology requires a certain level of understanding and grit - something that can be demonstrated by holding a Master’s degree. The varied teaching styles and assessment styles were also crucial, having lots of experience in presenting, digesting and interpreting data, but also group projects are all skills I use daily in my role.

What were the best things about your course?

  • The varied teaching and assessment styles
  • The support offered by all members of staff
  • The events held by the medical school to bring students together
