What made you choose the University of Birmingham?
Birmingham stood out for its strong academic reputation and the balance between research and real-world impact. I also liked the campus feel, the student community, and how well connected the university is to industry and policy-focused organisations.
Why did you choose to study your course?
I chose AI and Government because it sits right at the intersection of technology, policy, and public impact. The course at Birmingham really appealed to me because it focuses on how AI is actually used in government, not just the technical side.
What made University of Birmingham the right place for your course?
Birmingham offered a course that was both interdisciplinary and practical. The teaching style encouraged critical thinking, and the research focus helped me connect AI to real public sector challenges, which is exactly what I wanted.
What was your experience at Birmingham like?
It was busy but really enjoyable. I balanced lectures with a part-time hospitality job and played in the PolSoc six-a-side football league every Wednesday morning. Campus life was lively, and I enjoyed studying in the library and spending time with friends between sessions.
How did Birmingham help you throughout your studies?
The academic support was strong, and the Careers team helped me think more clearly about my next steps. Receiving a £10,000 AI and Data Science Scholarship was also a huge boost and made a real difference to my experience.
What has your journey looked like since graduating from Birmingham? How did Birmingham shape this?
Since graduating, I have been working at AJ Bell, gaining practical experience in a professional, data driven environment. Birmingham helped prepare me for this by strengthening my analytical thinking, confidence, and ability to apply academic knowledge to real world challenges.
What are you most proud of achieving during your time at Birmingham?
I am most proud of graduating with a distinction. It reflected the hard work I put in and the growth I experienced both academically and personally.
What advice would you give to current or prospective students?
Get involved early, both academically and socially. Use the support services, talk to your lecturers, and do not be afraid to try things outside your comfort zone. Also, balance your time well and enjoy the experience, it goes by quickly.
