What made you choose the University of Birmingham?

I chose the University of Birmingham for two main reasons. First, as someone with experience in fiction filmmaking, I wanted to broaden my skills by developing as a documentary filmmaker, which I believe will make me a more well-rounded storyteller. Second, I was particularly drawn to the placement module, which offers the opportunity to gain practical experience within the UK film industry. This will allow me to observe how the industry operates firsthand and bring those valuable insights and skills back home to help strengthen our growing filmmaking community.

Why did you choose to study your course?

I run a non-profit organisation in Guyana called the Georgetown Film Festival, which is all about helping local filmmakers grow and explore new ways of creating and thinking about films. The University of Birmingham’s documentary filmmaking program instantly caught my attention because it offers exactly the kind of fresh perspective and hands-on experience I want to bring back home. The placement opportunities are an added bonus. I can’t wait to see how the UK film industry works and use what I learn to help strengthen our own filmmaking community in Guyana.

What is your student experience like?

The University’s campus is absolutely massive and that’s no exaggeration. The surrounding areas also have plenty of student housing and there’s a beautiful little town nearby where you can grab a variety of hot meals. Thanks to the diverse student community, the food options are rich and varied, which I love because I enjoy trying new cuisines. I’m also a big fan of the University gym, especially since I love working out and swimming – and the 50-metre pool is a huge bonus.Having such great facilities right on campus is so convenient. I haven’t even finished exploring the University yet, but I can’t wait to see what else it has to offer.

Did you attend any events, online or on campus?

I haven't experienced this as yet, but I am soon to join the some of the creative societies the university has, which is over 350+ and so I am excited by this.

What's your favourite thing about Birmingham so far?

I love my campus and the city centre where there are a variety of things to do, like bowling, games and going to the cinema. I am yet to fully explore the beauty of Birmingham.

What advice would you give to current or prospective students to help them make the most of their time at Birmingham?

I think stay ahead of your studies and reading, but also make friends and network. School life shouldn't only be about studying, but about the friends and connections you make which can be long-lasting.
