How did you know that the University of Birmingham was the right choice for you?

Initially, what drew me to explore the mesmerizing campus of the University of Birmingham was its reputation as a renowned Russel Group University. Additionally, as a commuter, having a well-connected campus was essential for me. Once I confirmed availability for my chosen course, I attended the offer-holder day. The numerous opportunities that the University offered captivated me, including the library, tailored study spaces, career and wellbeing support, beautiful green spaces and museums. I could truly see myself spending the next three years of my life here!

Why did you choose to study your course?

After reading books that emphasised the importance of being financially literate, I realised that I wanted to follow this path. A BSc Accounting and Finance offered the flexibility to pursue a career in either field, combining technical knowledge with the development of essential soft skills. Learning from lecturers with both academical and professional backgrounds provided valuable perspectives. Additionally, I knew the specialised careers support service would enhance my employability and support my ambition to become a Chartered Accountant, making this the ideal course for me!

What is student life like for you?

Student life feels more independent and relaxed in comparison to earlier years of my academic journey. While there is a lot of support available, including wellbeing and academic skills, you are responsible for choosing which opportunities to take. Attending a variety of events has allowed me to socialise with students from a diverse range of backgrounds. Furthermore, timetables are flexible, which gives me greater freedom when it comes to organising my workload and social activities.

Becoming a Student Rep and Ambassador has enabled me to feel more involved within the university and it gave me a strong sense of belonging. It has shown me how the voice of students is heard and how everyone works towards our best interest.

Overall, student life has been an awesome experience, allowing me to learn more about myself and how I thrive in an independent environment while doing all the things I enjoy.

What's your favourite memory of university life so far?

As a chocolate lover, visiting Cadbury World as part of my course was an exciting and informative experience. We attended an engaging business talk, followed by a day of enjoyment exploring the site with my friends. We had the opportunity to expand our knowledge on the chocolate production process and learn about the company’s history. Additionally, we took part in various activities and went on several rides. This was an unforgettable day, and I would recommend to anyone who has the opportunity to visit.

What advice would you give to current or prospective students?

University life is a significant step, so I encourage students to spend the first two months adapting to the environment, exploring the beautiful campus and networking. This will help you feel more prepared for group assignments, locating your lectures and utilising the multiple study spaces. Additionally, joining societies allows you to build friendships while pursuing your interests. My advice is to make the most out of the opportunities presented to you and ensure that the journey is as enjoyable as the destination you aim to reach!
