After finishing my undergraduate degree in Sociology, I found myself at a crossroads. I was torn between continuing with Sociology at master’s level or diving into something new—an MRes in Sexuality and Gender Studies. The course was based in a completely different department and school, which felt a bit daunting, but in the end, I decided to choose what I was most passionate about and just go for it.

Switching departments came with challenges and moments of self-doubt. I often wondered, “Is this the right course for me?” But I reminded myself that feeling out of your depth is normal—and part of the learning process.

What drew me in was the interdisciplinary nature of the MRes. I was excited to explore topics like music and art that I hadn’t studied before. Starting fresh meant stepping out of my comfort zone, asking lots of questions, and making the most of the support available.

If you’re considering a similar change, my advice is to trust your interests, stay curious, and don’t be afraid to reach out. It’s a big step—but a rewarding one!
