Why did you originally apply to do your chosen course at Birmingham?
Birmingham stood out to me because of its strong QS ranking, the vibrant student life, and the course modules, which are a perfect blend for someone from any background. The diverse and multicultural student community here was also a big draw — it’s the kind of place where you truly get to explore everything.
What do you think are the best points of your course?
The best part is that sessions are focused and never overwhelming — everything is kept concise and to the point. All the professors are approachable and available to guide you at any stage. The modules are designed for people from every background, making it genuinely inclusive. Most importantly, the course prepares you professionally for the industry, not just from an academic standpoint.
What’s the best thing about studying at Birmingham?
The variety of events that take place here is incredible — everyone finds their place. Beyond academics, there’s always a space to showcase your talents. The city itself is vibrant and full of life, making it brilliant for student life. The university is also perfectly central, giving you easy access to everywhere in Birmingham.
What’s the highlight of your time at the University?
Usually your friends come from the same course or department, but here I’ve built friendships across departments and age groups, which has been truly enriching. I feel a real sense of support from the communities here — I genuinely felt at home. We also come together to celebrate festivals from different countries, which is something I treasure. Performing at one of the societies' opening nights was a memorable highlight I’ll never forget.
What advice would you give to students thinking about studying on the course?
Before starting, I didn’t realise how important it is to have a clear mindset about why you’re here. There will be tough days — you’ll feel tired, miss home, and get overwhelmed. But please reach out for help; the University’s wellbeing community is there for you. For the course itself, make full use of the many skill-building workshops available. Guidance is always there — you just need to seek it. Start early when it comes to part-time work, internships, or job applications. Ask questions and don’t hesitate to do anything that will shape you into a better version of yourself.
Is there anything extra students thinking about studying on the course should know?
I know you’re coming here to pursue your dreams, and that’s wonderful — but please don’t be too hard on yourself. Explore new places, make use of all the resources available to you, have fun, and stay balanced. That balance is what makes the experience truly worthwhile.
