A Day in my Life
A typical day for me involves back-to-back appointments with claimants. In these sessions, we discuss how their job search is progressing, or, if they are self-employed, how their business is developing. I work closely with external providers such as the National Careers Service and health and wellbeing coaches. I also offer financial support to individuals, helping them address barriers to work and verifying childcare support. Additionally, I organize and deliver a work experience program for individuals interested in working for the civil service.
My Journey to DWP
I graduated in 2004 as a qualified maths teacher and spent a year in that role. Afterward, I had a successful 15-year career in finance, along with other self-employed ventures such as private tuition and performing arts. In 2021, I decided to retrain as a careers advisor and returned to the University of Birmingham in 2022 to work as a careers advisor at the College of Arts and Law. It was during this time that I learned about the Work Coach role with DWP.
The application process was rigorous. I wrote a 500-word personal statement fulfilling three performance criteria, followed by an online self-assessment and an interview. The interview was recorded over video, where I was once again assessed on the same criteria. After being successful in July 2023, I underwent various background checks, including DBS, right to work, and employment history, before starting my current role in October 2023.
My Birmingham Experience
My University of Birmingham experience helped me tremendously when applying for teaching roles. The skills I developed during my studies, especially in terms of service delivery and customer satisfaction, were key to demonstrating my competencies during the Work Coach application process. My previous experience as a careers advisor in 2022 also helped me effectively showcase my qualifications for the job.
Birmingham's Impact
The University of Birmingham provided me with opportunities such as free careers advice, online tutorials, and internship opportunities, all of which helped me grow both personally and professionally. I also found the tutors and facilities exceptional, and being part of such a vibrant and prestigious institution was a true privilege.
My Achievements
One of my standout achievements during my studies was participating in the student tutoring scheme in 2001. This experience greatly enriched my personal and professional development, and it remains a memorable milestone in my journey.
Advice for Students
My advice to students today is to take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way, such as free careers advice, online tutorials, internship opportunities, and careers fairs. These experiences will help you develop essential skills and build a network that can be beneficial to your career in the long term.
