How did you know that the University of Birmingham was the right choice for you?

Being from London, I knew I wanted to study at a university in a large UK city. Birmingham stood out as a vibrant place to live, offering a wide range of eateries, social activities and nightlife. After visiting for both a summer open day and a winter offer-holder day, seeing the campus across different seasons confirmed my decision. I was particularly drawn to the campus-based setting, where everything is within easy walking distance, making it easy to move between lectures without feeling rushed.

Why did you choose to study your course?

Since studying business from GCSE onwards, I have always been set on pursuing it at university. Business offers a strong balance between practical and theoretical learning, depending on the modules chosen. The University of Birmingham stood out due to its wide range of partner universities, which was crucial to my decision to study abroad. Studying in Singapore, where the education system is highly prestigious, was an opportunity made possible through UoB’s international connections and broadened my understanding of cultural differences in business and finance.

What is student life like for you?

Student life has been an important part of my university experience, allowing me to build strong friendships while maintaining a healthy balance between my academic and social life. I enjoy staying organised and productive, ensuring I meet deadlines while still making time to socialise and enjoy university life. Being involved in societies such as the Birmingham Investments and Finance Society has allowed me to gain practical exposure and develop skills that support my future career aspirations, while the Birmingham Asian Society provides a fun and inclusive space to interact with like-minded people. Maintaining a routine that balances studying, socialising and personal wellbeing has been key to my experience. I enjoy spending time with friends, attending university events and making the most of living in a lively city, while continuing to prioritise my academic responsibilities.

What's your favourite memory of university life so far?

My favourite memory has been my study abroad experience in Singapore. Going alongside three other University of Birmingham students, it pushed me outside of my comfort zone through meeting new people and exploring a new university campus. I made lasting memories and formed friendships with people from Birmingham, just on the other side of the world. Returning home made me realise how much I value Birmingham and how comfortable and settled I feel after living here for over two years.

What advice would you give to current or prospective students?

My advice would be to get involved early and make the most of the opportunities available, both academically and socially. Joining societies, attending events and trying new things is one of the best ways to meet people and feel part of the university community. During freshers’ week, remember that everyone is in the same boat, so don’t be afraid to introduce yourself, as it could lead to some of your closest friendships. At the same time, find a routine that helps you stay on top of your studies. Explore Birmingham, but remember that balance is key.
